I received a text message today: "Your account number xxxxxx is past due. Pay the entire balance today. Call xxx-xxx-xxxx. Reply stop to stop."

 I googled the return number and discovered it belongs to an agency in Massachusetts.

A collection agency? an adoption agency? Sounds like a bunch of scammers trying to get money to me!

Type in STOP.

They now have 5 days to send you a letter provided that this was the initial communication.

Save the text. You may have the beginnings of a TCPA case.

Did you give you cell number to the OC?

It is a collection agency I had never heard of.

I have never given my cellphone number to any of my creditors nor to any business at all.

After further research, I've discovered this company is fond of the "We are sending the sheriff to arrest you at work," method of collection.

Get that on tape. It is the classic FDCPA violation.

Hi scarygirl!  I notice a few more violations from the text message:

1) Causing a consumer to be charged for the communication (text message)
2) No mini-miranda
3) Possible TCPA violation(s)
4) Not disclosing company name (unless it did on the caller ID).
